Focus on Functionality
When determining the platform to launch an application, the desired functionality and the client
base is critical.
Some projects are suitable for the desktop, but others reach a wider audience as web-based applications.
Choosing the appropriate platform to release a product is a critical decision for any application. Desktop applications function well in single-user environments or security-oriented locations. Web-based tools are more appropriate in networked-oriented organizations or for lightweight code distribution. Functionality based on text-based information is an ideal candidate for web deployment.
Desktop Authoring Tools
Various options exist for development on the desktop. Microsoft .Net (Visual Basic.Net and C#.Net) is a commonly
used environment because it is naively supported in modern Windows and can integrate with databases such as
Microsoft SQL Server.
Since most web-based applications are database oriented and need to be portable, allowing a choice of web hosts, PHP and MySQL are the defacto standard for web development. ASP.Net is an additional choice for Windows Server based systems.
Active Keyring
To minimized the problem of remembering multiple usernames and passwords for web sites and applications, Active Keyring was developed
to store the data under a single password and stored in XML format using encryption.
Programmmed in Visual Basic .Net and deployed via the Web, this application is available worldwide with a tiny distribution cost vs. retail outlet placement.
P3PEdit
To cope with the complexities of P3P for web sites, P3PEdit was created to provide a simple solution for web masters
who need to allow third-party cookies in Internet Explorer. P3PEdit was developed in PHP with MySQL and runs on a dedicated
server. It serves thousands of web masters, internationally, 24 hours a day.
